Roofing in Melbourne

A small roof leak rarely stays small. Water tracks along timbers and shows up somewhere else entirely, so the visible stain and the actual entry point are often metres apart. Getting a roofer up there early is nearly always cheaper than the ceiling repair later.

One thing many people do not realise: in Victoria, metal roofing, guttering and downpipe work is roof plumbing, which is licensed work. Tile repairs and restorations sit outside that licence. We sort tradies accordingly.

ROOF PLUMBING IS LICENSED WORK

Metal roof installation, gutters, downpipes and rainwater goods are classed as roof plumbing in Victoria and must be done by a licensed or registered plumber. Tile roof repairs and restorations are not licensed plumbing work. Where your job involves roof plumbing, licence-checked tradies handle it, and their quotes carry the licence badge.

Common questions

Roofing questions, answered straight

I can see a water stain on the ceiling. What photos help?

A photo of the stain, a wide shot of the roof from the street, and one from inside the roof space near the wet area if it is safe to look. Note recent weather too: leaks that only appear in driving rain from one direction tell a roofer a lot.

Is a roof restoration worth it versus replacement?

If the tiles are structurally sound, a restoration (clean, rebed, repoint, seal or paint) can add many years for a fraction of replacement cost. If tiles are brittle and breaking underfoot, restoration money is better put toward a new roof. An honest roofer will tell you which side you are on.

Do you handle gutter replacement?

Yes. Gutters and downpipes are roof plumbing in Victoria, so this work goes to licence-checked plumbers on the platform. Continuous gutter runs, box gutters and rainheads all belong in the job description.

Can work happen on a two-storey roof?

Yes, but access and safety change the price. Mention storeys, roof pitch if you know it, and anything like solar panels or skylights. Some jobs need edge protection or scaffolding, which shows up as a line item.
